Books I read when I deprogrammed
by OrphanCrow inblondie suggested someone start a thread with a list of books that are valuable to read when exiting the jws.. i will start.. i left the jws way back in the early 70s and didn't actually deprogram until into the 80s.. one of the first books i read was "the orwellian world of jehovah's witnesses" by gary and heather botting.
canadian exjws from calagary.
an excellent book and one that still resonates with young people today.

So obvious, but must be mentioned: "Crisis of Conscience" & "In Search of Christian Freedom" by Ray Franz. -

Book Review: The Watchtower Society, Organizational Misbehavior
by johnny depp inthis is the way crisis of conscience should have been written.
finally, a book written on the watchtower society by someone who actually knows how to write!
after reading the subheading, “the psychology of jehovah’s witnesses,” (pages 160–182), i have abandoned the belief that we have an “unconscious,” and will never again consult any psychologist, psychiatrist, or counselor.

Honestly, Did Jehovah's Witnesses Do Anything POSITIVE For You?
by minimus ini was raised as a witness and am very thankful that i am out.
having said that, i think my upbringing produced positive qualities in me.
do you believe that anything positive came from your being a witness?

Blondie, I did not mean to minimize the dastardly and cowardly acts of the organization and its terrible and tragic policies regarding any forms of abuse, or molestation, child abuse, domestic violence, and child sexual abuse.
The WT organization has indeed, been "weighed in the balances and has been found wanting."

I was going to answer this with what I felt were things which helped me at the time, as a young, struggling single mom.
There did seem to be many positive things (at first, anyway!)
-- an instant crowd of friends (you don't realize till later, how conditional is the love and friendship)
-- a sense of purpose and being right, of having all the answers finally (another illusion)
-- a sense of security, of bonding together, being united in a common goal (I've learned this need not be a religious goal, can be political, social, environmental, hobbies, etc.)
-- you represented the true God, the most high of all creation.... you alone (with your brothers and sisters) were the only people on the whole earth who had the only life-preserving message and "truth" ...oh gawd. The mind bending on that last one was so strong....! To think abut having such an attitude as that, to really believe that.... Well. I would say it makes a person a bit .... "presumptuous".... eh, Bro Jackson..???

Question for Rosemarie (from page 1) -- I am curious, what would you say is the "whopping big difference" between "living under the GB's rules & Jesus' rules"...? -

Lana, I would love to hear your answer to Konceptual99, on page 3. And to hear you explain what it means when Jesus says to "love your neighbour".
Las a JW, I believed that when Jesus spoke about feeding the hungry, clothing the needy, providing refreshment for those who were thirsty, it meant all this is a "spiritual" fulfillment. Yet the man in the parable provided literal comfort and care.
If a JW practiced what the WT really means by acts of kindness and charity, he would be stepping over the injured man laying on the road, but carefully placing a tract or some literature beside him, before carrying on their way.

JW Expressions We Hate
by Socrateswannabe ini was browsing through stuff on jw.org recently and ran across some expressions that really grate on my nerves: loyal love, loving-care, and loving-kindness, as in: "please exercise loving-kindness toward your servant.
" who talks like that?
they must be relics of the fred franz era.

"Good morning! Nice to find you home today. We're talking with our neighbours today about...."
"The Governing Body loves you...."
"Are you whole-souled? Or is there a *hole* in your soul?"
... (ha, these next three are fun to read in order!)
".... lusting over..."
"Jehovah and his earthly organization /representatives"
"... whose genitals were like horses and their emissions like donkeys..."
"...

Ha, so true, MC. I wondered about this too. Why would so many people rebel?? It didn't make sense that so many of our "brothers and sisters" living in a beautiful paradise would want to side with Satan.
... Stupid teachings and philosophies of men which made no sense....
